Lighting the way

Leadership is facing "the biggest change in local government since the end of the war".

These are the words of local government minister Phil Woolas. The Leadership Centre for Local Government has been set up especially to meet this challenge.

Over the years there has been a seismic shift in the relationship between the local authority and its locality partners - such as health, police and the voluntary sector.

This means that a chief executive and leader no longer lead just their local authority's public service delivery, but instead lead and represent their entire city/town/county.

This is the leadership challenge facing local authorities today.

The Leadership Centre for Local Government exists to highlight the need to develop the skills to operate in this new context - as a means for local government to deliver for its citizens.

We work locally with senior leaders (members and officers) in English councils to raise council performance through enhanced leadership. Offering a unique approach, we target the top team with a tailored service that works on live issues in situ.

We work nationally with all political groups under the Civic Pride   programme: talent-spotting new council candidates, developing future council leaders and helping new political cabinets to manage the process of change following elections. This campaign of initiatives is designed to encourage effective, visible and accountable local leadership.

We are expert brokers of leadership development services and we are leading on bringing together and developing the latest thinking on local leadership.
