Leaders UK is a new kind of leadership
programme. It is designed to create leaders for the whole public service system by working
collaboratively with people in all the many and varied organisations involved in
delivering public services and policy. It is aimed at people who are on their way to
becoming a top leader in any part of the public, private or voluntary sectors.
This programme has been developed because the top leaders of the
public, private and voluntary sectors see a need to build collaborative leadership
capacity to shape the way we deliver policy, improve services and achieve positive
outcomes for consumers and citizens. Leadership within organisations is important, but
more important is the capacity to get things done across organisational boundaries, in
complex systems that need to integrate an enormous array of policies and resources.
Leadership Centre support
As part of the Leadership Centres programme of supporting and developing leadership
in local government and ensuring that the sector is properly represented on the Leaders UK
programme, the Leadership Centre offered bursaries of 50 per cent of the costs for up to
20 local authority participants for the programme beginning in September 2005. The 2005
