The main focus of the work of the Leadership Centre is with senior
members and senior managers in individual local authorities in England or with members of
the local strategic partnership.
How we work with authorities
We offer authorities a service tailored to their needs which begins with a preparatory
phase, normally taking around 15 days, in which a top leadership adviser works with
the senior political and management teams of an authority to consider the leadership
issues facing them locally.
This phase is funded entirely by the centre and results in a detailed
three-year strategy to address that authority and that community's leadership
challenges.

The Leadership Centre subsidises up to 30 per cent of the cost of the resulting three-year leadership development work, which will be
carried out by the best providers in the market.
We are currently setting up a database of all
organisations and individuals that develop leadership at senior political and managerial
level. This will be made available to all local authorities.
We will work closely with the very best of these
and will use them to deliver the long-term leadership strategy for the authorities.

Centre of excellence
The Leadership Centre is building up its expertise in leadership and is creating a centre
of excellence available to all local authorities via our website or by contacting us
directly. This resource will contain everything local government needs to know about
developing their leaders and will be a window to the latest advances in leadership
thinking.
Learning about leadership
We are bringing together selected groups of chief executives and their leaders/mayors to
share and learn from each others’ experience of working together in their unique
partnership. Feedback from the sessions will be published in the new year.
Political leadership
The Leadership Centre is investing in the development of political leaders. Our cabinet
development centres, the first-ever programme aimed at making cabinets more effective, has
already been used by a number of authorities including Westminster, Bracknell Forest and
Kingston upon Thames.
We are now pioneering work with poltical groups
about how best to work with administrations either in control or about to take control, to
help them tackle the issues that confront them politically.
